How to Unstuck a frozen Garage Door?

Often during winter, most residential garage doors stick. Depending on the type of the garage door, it may freeze on the floor, and you won’t be able to move it. Such situations usually are stressful to both the homeowner and the garage door openers, especially if you need to remove something using the garage door.

Below are simple steps that you can apply to unstick your garage door without destroying it, and thus needing a garage door repair, afterward:

Step 1: Disengage the Garage door opener

The opener is only formulated to overcome normal weight load. When the door is frozen, you will need to apply extra lift that the opener isn’t fashioned to overcome. To disengage the opener, you will need to pull the handle of the opener, straight down.

Step 2: Clear away the snow blocking the front of the door

You can use a shovel to scoop away the ice or snow from the front of the garage door. F you have a hair dryer or heat gun, use it to melt the ice below the door. You should do this after you have scooped the buildup of ice from your garage door.

If you are using a heat gun, ensure that the heat emanating from it doesn’t damage the finishing of the garage door or its seal at the bottom. Once you have worked your way through the whole length of the door, spray a chemical deicer along the length. It will keep the ice from freezing back.

Step 3: Lift the door by hand and reconnect the garage door opener

Once the ice at the bottom of the garage door, is cleared, try and lift the door by hand, from the inside. Lifting it from the outside doesn’t give you leverage or ample footing as the ice is slippery. If you aren’t able to lift the door by yourself, you can ask for help.

Close the door and re-engage the automatic garage door opener by pulling its release handle towards it.

Step 4: Remove excess moisture from the floor of the garage

It is important to clear the floor of your garage from any objects or elements. During the winter season, remember to sweep any road salt or slush away from the opening of your garage door.

If you are having difficulty in operating your garage door and are looking for garage door parts repair, in Toronto or Mississauga, you can contact a member of our team at Pro-Masters.
